Hungarian violinist Antal Zalai has performed internationally across 46 countries on four continents as a soloist, recitalist and recording artist. He is joined by Belgian pianist Barbara Baltussen, a founding member of Trio Khaldei, known for her work in chamber music and her advocacy of contemporary and female composers. The programme explores the Hungarian and wider European violin repertoire, from the late-Romantic writing of Dohnányi and the Hungarian dance influences in Hubay’s Scènes de la Csárda No. 5 to Rimsky-Korsakov’s concert fantasy on The Golden Cockerel, arranged by Efrem Zimbalist. Bartók’s Rhapsody No. 1 draws on Eastern European folk traditions, while Franck’s Sonata in A major, composed in 1886 as a wedding gift for violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, brings the recital to a close.
