The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, a vivid orchestral tone poem capturing the stillness of a windless sea and the hopeful surge of a ship setting sail. Mahler’s deeply personal Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) follows, with Dame Sarah Connolly bringing poignant expression to this early song cycle that traces a young man’s journey through love and heartbreak. The evening culminates in Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 10, a monumental work shaped in the shadow of Stalin’s death, blending brooding introspection with explosive energy and resilience.
