Piotr Borkowski

Resident Conductor

Piotr Borkowski was born in Warsaw in 1963 is a graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, where he was a pupil of Boguslaw Madey. He made his conducting debut at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1986 and went on to study with Hans Graf in Vienna and with Myung-Whun Chung and Ilija Musin at Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

Borkowski regularly conducts orchestras and chamber groups around the world, including those in Poland (Warsaw National Philharmonic), France, Italy (Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana), Germany (Berliner Symphoniker), Sweden, Mexico, USA, Taiwan, China, Slovakia, Ukraine, Brazil and South Korea.. He has recorded for the Polish Radio, Katowice (NPRSO) and for commercial outfits at home (Gorzow Philharmonic, Olsztyn Philharmonic, Podlasie Philharmonic, Beethoven Academy Orchestra) and abroad (Korean Chamber Orchestra). He recorded for Polskie Nagrania, Polonia Records, SPV GmbH, Acte Pre?alable, Skarbo, DUX, Global Sound Media, Centaur Records, Musica Sacra Edition and NAXOS. In 2006 and 2008 he received the Polish Phonographic Award “Fryderyk” for the best recording and interpretation of Polish music. In 2013, his recording with violinist Soyoung Yoon, 1st prize winner of the Wieniawski International Violin Competition, was nominated for the prestigious International Classical Music Award.

An active pedagogue, Borkowski has held posts as assistant professor at his alma mater, the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, and later as professor of conducting and orchestra director at the Hyosung Catholic University in Daegu and at the University of Suwon, where he also served as Chair of the Orchestral Department.

In 2006, Borkowski was appointed the conductor of the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea. In 2008, he founded the Gyeonggi Festival Orchestra, and held the post of chief conductor till 2011. In 2010, he was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the newly-established  Gorzow Philharmonic - Centre for Art Education (Poland), a post he held till 2012.

Presently, Borkowski is the Music Director of the United Chamber Orchestra, and First Guest Conductor of the Kammersolisten der Deutschen Oper Berlin. He was appointed Resident Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of India in April 2015.
